What is a Standard?

Before we take a look at Learning standards it will be helpful to think about standards in general first.

ISO [go the the website of ISO] defines standards as:

"Documented agreements containing technical specifications or other precise criteria to be used consistently as rules, guidelines, or definitions of characteristics, to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose".

A good example of a worldwide standard is LEGO. With LEGO objects you can build the things you want. Even if there are different objects with different sizes and colors, they fit all together and they can be combined in every way because the objects follow certain rules! The pins are exactly the same size and they always fit. Kids keep playing with it because the possibilities to create new things are almost unlimited.
