Usefulness of technology

"Education is the only business still debating the usefulness of technology…."

Quote from Rod Paige, US Secretary of Education (2001-2005).

It is funny how much we keep talking about the use of e-Learning instead of just doing and experiencing it. We keep coming up with the disadvantages. Other people inside and outside our organizations are keep coming up with the disadvantages.

e-Learning is no miracle oil. You cannot fix all your educational, financial or organizational problems by introducing e-Learning.

e-Learning is no religion. It is important to have a clear and honest idea about it. To know both the advantages and the disadvantages. As you have a clear understanding of the characteristics, you will be able to judge the value and implications for your learners and learning processes.

Think about the Gartner Hype-cycle. Let's look at some (dis)advantages, with an open mind. Keep your head clear!

IDevice Question Icon Trainers will soon be out of a job?
Some people think that the implementation of e-Learning will mean that lots of trainers and teachers will soon be out of a job.

What do you think of this statement?

It is completely true. The role of the trainers and teacher will be replaced by computer applications, courseware and advanced learning management systems.
Maybe this is partly true. The number of hours spend in face-to-face training and teaching will be reduced but they can spend their time on other activities like coaching.
It is not true. The role of a trainer/teacher is too important and soon the educational field will reduce the time and money spend on e-Learning solution.
